Comparison of Ranks Prior to 2017 State Regional Round

This page shows the rankings from various sources of the state qualified teams prior to the regional round of the state tournaments.

WRPI is the official WIAA RPI used for seeding. TBRPI is the teambrunnhilde.com RPI (TBRPI stands for 'the better' RPI also). WL is just won-lost percentage. CapWL is captured wins and losses. TBPts is the teambrunnhilde.com points ranking (the one I like best) calculated February 23. MP is the MaxPreps ranking taken from the MaxPreps site February 23. EV is the Evans Rankings taken February 23. SC is the ScoreCzar ranking taken from the ScoreCzar site on February 23. I couldn't find an Associated Press poll later than February 1, so I didn't include AP this year.

TBPts and SC ranks are based on points scored and allowed. They are for the entire season. RPI is based on wins and losses for the entire season. For TBPts, SC, and RPI there is no "what have you done for me lately" component of the ranking. I don't have information on just what Evans Rankings uses, but it is a proprietary formula. The MaxPreps rating uses wins and losses with greater weighting for playoff games. So there is some form of recent performance adjustment. It is unknown if scores (other than win/loss) affect the rating.

Rankings are those for the team within the entire set of teams for a classification. They are not 1 to 16 for the 16 state qualifiers. This results in some holes in the rankings. These may be due to upsets at district tournaments, but more often reflect the uneven spread of good teams between the districts. It may also reflect district bracketing that pitted good teams against eachother at an early state of the tournaments.

Note that the Bothell girls team and the Clarkston boys team, neither of which qualified for the state tournament, were both rated #1 by some of the ranking methods. This means those ratings are unable to claim selection of the champion even if their top rated team in the tournament emerges as the winner.

This season has produced a lot of discussion regarding the RPI ranking method. The other rankings shown here are likely just or even more suitable than RPI. One can see commonalities and differences between the rankings. Just because the WIAA selected RPI does not raise that method to the right hand of God. Applying the pre-tournament rankings to tournament games yields comparisons between the ranking methods. The results will be shown at the bottom of this page following the tournament. It is felt that every other ranking should be able to do better than just Win-Loss. We'll see.

Win-Loss actually performed better than WIAA RPI on a percentage basis. So WIAA RPI was the worst rating method. Overall accuracy of picking game winners is down from last season.

For unanimous games, raters were correct 114 games and wrong 28 games (19.7% wrong). Unanimous picks and were equally split between girls and boys.

When a ranking method was alone in selecting a team to win a game, Team Brunnhilde Points was 6-4, MaxPreps was 2-2, ScoreCzar was 5-11, Win-Loss was 2-7, WIAA RPI was 1-7, The Better RPI was 0-1. Captured W-L and Evans Rating had no solo picks.

Team Brunnhilde Points had five of the 12 champions ranked #1. Other rankings had four (ScoreCzar), three (The Better RPI, Win-Loss, Captured W-L, MaxPreps), and two (WIAA RPI and Evans Ranking). No ranker picked any of the girls champions. WIAA RPI rankings for champions were 1, 1, 2, 3, 3, 4, 5, 8, 8, 8, 9, 20. The 20 was Foss, 2A Boys Champion. A huge upset? No. Team Brunnhilde Points and Score Czar both had Foss as their champion pick. So Foss was the worst blown call for WIAA RPI. Besides the Bothell girls. Or the Clarkston boys.
